In 1995 Michael Maher was appointed as a member of the Peoples' Trial Advocates (PTA) by Governor Lawton Chiles and Attorney General Robert Butterworth, of the State of Florida. The Peoples' Trial Advocates is composed of 11 law firms that contracted with the State of Florida to maintain an action on behalf of the State against the tobacco industry for the return of medicaid benefits which were paid on tobacco related illnesses.

Michael Maher served as Chairman of the PT A, whose efforts resulted in a settlement of more than $25 billion for the State of Florida. In addition, Mr. Maher was the only Florida Private Counsel involved with National Private Counsel for the State of Florida in final settlement discussions between the tobacco industry and Governor Chiles and Attorney General Robert Butterworth. Mr. Maher was also engaged, at the direction of Governor Chiles and Attorney General Robert Butterworth, in the negotiations between the State Attorney Generals of the United States and the tobacco industry, resulting in a national agreement of over $200 billion.

In addition to his expertise in tobacco litigation, Mr. Maher has over 39 years experience as a trial lawyer specializing in personal injury and wrongful death cases throughout the United States. He has obtained multiple million dollar recoveries in all types ofthese cases. Mr. Maher has received numerous prestigious awards and has been recognized in a Harvard study published as The Best Lawyers in America and in the Town and Country Magazine study, "The Best Lawyers in the U.S." In 1990 and 1991 Mr. Maher served as President of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the world's largest association of trial lawyers with over 60,000 members. Other honors he has received include election as a fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers in 1988, selection by the American Board of Trial Advocates in 1989, induction into the American College of Trial Lawyers 1993 and receipt of the Florida Trial Lawyer of the Year Award in 1999 from The American Board of Trial Advocates.
